Look at the garden when slugs are active
A leaf full of holes is evidence of chewing, not proof of slugs. Caterpillars, beetles, snails, and other animals can produce damage that looks similar at a glance. Visit the affected area after dark with a flashlight or early in the morning, especially when conditions are damp. Look at the plant, the soil around it, and nearby shelter.
Slugs are soft-bodied mollusks without an external shell, not insects. The University of Minnesota slug guide describes their moist-site habits and the slime trails that can help confirm activity. A dried trail is useful evidence, but its absence does not rule slugs out.
Inspect under pots, loose boards, dense debris, and low leaves without dismantling the whole garden. If you find slugs, record where they are concentrated. A cluster beside one damp stack of unused trays suggests a more focused response than finding them throughout every bed.
Take a photograph of the leaf damage and the animal when possible. Keep the two observations linked: a slug found far away is not necessarily responsible for every chewed plant. If damage continues without a confirmed culprit, seek identification rather than adding several unrelated controls at once.
Separate old holes from tonight's feeding
Leaves do not repair missing sections. A plant can retain a battered appearance after feeding has stopped, and a growing leaf may make an old hole look larger. Photograph a few representative leaves and check emerging growth to judge whether damage is continuing.
Look for the location and extent of fresh injury. A large established plant losing a small amount of outer foliage may tolerate it. A newly emerged seedling with its growing point eaten has much less room for recovery. Focus attention on vulnerable plants instead of treating every cosmetic hole as an equal emergency.
Note whether stems are severed, leaf surfaces are scraped, or pieces are missing from the edges. These observations help distinguish possible causes, even though no single pattern is perfectly diagnostic. Do not force every symptom into the first explanation you considered.
Set a clear protection goal. You might aim to get a tray of transplants established, preserve enough leaf area on a prized specimen, or reduce feeding on fruit close to the ground. That goal determines where your time and any protective equipment are most useful.
If a plant is declining more than the feeding appears to explain, examine watering and roots as well. Damp conditions favorable to slugs can coexist with poor drainage, and solving only the chewing may leave the larger problem untouched.
Remove avoidable shelter, not all garden habitat
Slugs use protected, moist places during unfavorable conditions. The University of California IPM slug guidance recommends combining management methods, including reducing hiding places and changing irrigation practices where feasible. A single barrier rarely substitutes for understanding the surrounding habitat.
Start with materials that serve no current gardening purpose: unused pots lying on their sides, discarded boards, and piles of wet plant debris pressed against vulnerable seedlings. Relocate or tidy them so inspection is easier. Avoid leaving a new hiding place directly beside the plant you are trying to protect.
This does not mean removing all leaf litter or organic matter from the property. Habitat for other organisms and appropriate soil cover still matter. Make focused changes around the vulnerable crop while retaining suitable habitat elsewhere. A small clear inspection zone may be enough to improve access without stripping a whole bed bare.
Check mulch placement and depth around seedlings. A thick, constantly damp layer touching tiny plants can make monitoring difficult. Adjust it to the plant and site rather than assuming more mulch is always better or that all mulch must be removed.
Keep paths and container bases accessible. When you can lift a pot safely or inspect its base without moving ten others, repeated checks become much more practical.
Adjust moisture without stressing the plants
If irrigation leaves the garden wet through the night, consider whether watering earlier would meet plant needs while reducing prolonged surface dampness. Drip irrigation can also limit how much surrounding surface is wetted in an appropriate setup. Neither approach is a guarantee, particularly during rainy weather.
Do not withhold needed water from seedlings to make the garden hostile to slugs. The aim is to remove unnecessary wetness, not trade feeding damage for drought injury. Check the root zone and adjust water according to the actual plants and weather.
Repair leaks, empty unnecessary standing water, and avoid routinely spraying paths or empty areas while watering a small crop. These changes reduce wasted water as well as some favorable conditions. They are often more sustainable than adding a treatment while leaving a constant moisture source unchanged.

During a prolonged wet spell, accept that cultural changes may have limited immediate effect and increase protection of the most vulnerable plants.
Use physical controls as a checked system
Repeated hand collection can help in a small area. Wear gloves, use a container, and follow an appropriate local disposal method; do not move pests into a neighboring garden or natural area. Wash hands afterward. A quick inspection performed consistently is more useful than a single intensive search followed by weeks without checking.
A deliberately placed board can function as a monitored shelter where slugs collect. It only helps if you lift it and remove the occupants regularly. Left unchecked, it simply becomes another refuge. Place any monitoring shelter where it is easy to find and does not create a tripping hazard.
Barriers need attention to continuity and access routes. Leaves touching across an edge, gaps, soil bridges, or slugs already inside a protected area can defeat the intended exclusion. Inspect the whole boundary rather than judging it by how neat one visible section looks.
Do not rely on crushed eggshells, coffee grounds, or a ring of dry material as a guaranteed solution. Weather, material condition, and the particular setup affect results, and repeated additions can create new soil or housekeeping problems. Avoid salt in the garden; harming soil and nearby plants is not a sensible trade.
Use supports or container placement to reduce easy contact between vulnerable growth and nearby hiding places where practical. That is a useful design adjustment, but do not promise it eliminates all slug access.
Treat bait as a targeted, label-governed option
If confirmed feeding remains unacceptable after practical physical and cultural measures, a labeled slug or snail bait may be an option. Choose by the exact product label, the crop or site, and relevant risks—not by a broad claim that every product with a particular ingredient is harmless.
Follow placement, rate, storage, and reapplication directions. Do not pile bait into concentrated heaps or improvise a homemade mixture. Keep products away from children, pets, and wildlife according to the label, and do not assume an organic gardening claim removes those responsibilities.
A bait is not an identification tool. If the damage comes from a different animal, using it may not help. Continue checking for fresh injury and live slugs so the response stays tied to evidence.
Avoid listing a universal dose in your garden notes without the full product identity. Formulations differ, and old instructions may not match a replacement container. Keep the original packaging and label available for reference.
Ask local extension for advice when a sensitive site, valuable planting, or persistent outbreak complicates the decision. Bring photographs and describe the nonchemical steps already tried. That information makes a recommendation more relevant than a general request for the strongest slug killer.
Measure success by healthy new growth
Judge progress through new leaves, surviving seedlings, and reduced fresh feeding. Old holes may remain visible until those leaves naturally age out. Removing every damaged leaf can needlessly reduce the plant's remaining capacity to grow.
Continue periodic checks after rain or a change in irrigation. A temporary dry spell can reduce visible activity without resolving the conditions around a vulnerable bed. Conversely, a few slugs present without meaningful new damage do not require an escalating campaign.
Record the locations that repeatedly suffer. Next season, you may raise transplants longer before planting, improve access, change a hiding-place arrangement, or select a less vulnerable plant for that particular spot. Those decisions can reduce repeated effort.
Successful slug management is usually a combination of confirmation, targeted protection, and manageable maintenance. Protect the plants that need help most, reassess the evidence, and stop short of trying to eliminate every mollusk from an outdoor garden.
