Start with one representative cutting and a short history

Record the plant, cutting date, stem stage, medium, covering and location. When did the change appear: immediately after taking the cutting, after a hot afternoon, or after potting it? The timeline separates initial dehydration from later decay or transplant stress. If the plant identity or stem stage is uncertain, revisit matching cuttings to species and humidity before modifying the setup. A woody shrub cutting taken in winter should not be judged by the same clock as a soft coleus tip.

Choose one failing cutting and one sound-looking neighbor to compare. Check the medium below the surface and whether the pot is standing in collected water. Support the medium as you lift a representative plant instead of yanking its stem. Purdue describes checking by gently lifting from underneath and returning unrooted cuttings to the mix when appropriate. Repeated pulling can destroy the very roots you are waiting to find. A soft or blackening base needs triage before extra humidity

Look for tissue that has become soft, translucent, narrowed or structurally weak near the medium. A brown woody stem can be normal; texture and progression matter more than color alone. Remove cuttings that are actively decaying and any fallen foliage. Nebraska Extension specifically advises discarding rotting material and preventing leaves from resting on the rooting surface or touching adjacent cuttings. Check the affected patch for a blocked drain, a leaf buried during sticking, or water accumulating beneath one end of the tray. If several stems fail in the same corner, inspect that corner before blaming every mother plant. Start replacements in fresh appropriate medium and a cleaned container rather than pushing them into holes left by rotted stems. Do not keep recutting a collapsing stem into smaller pieces simply because one leaf is still green. Preserve healthy stock material for a better-timed attempt.

A firm stem with limp leaves may have a water-loss problem

Unrooted stems have limited water uptake while their leaves continue losing water. Iowa State recommends starting with hydrated material, processing it promptly and reducing leaf area when large leaves create excessive demand. A supported bag or dome can maintain humidity around suitable leafy cuttings, but it should not trap them against wet plastic. Bright indirect light supports rooting; too much light can overheat or burn enclosed foliage. Houseplants from stem-tip cuttings

If the mix is still moist and the base firm, move the container out of hot direct sun before watering again. Restore suitable humidity and reassess leaf posture under cooler conditions. If the mix is dry through the rooting depth, water gently and let excess drain. These are different corrections. A cutting that repeatedly collapses each afternoon may be in a location whose heat and drying demand exceed the system's capacity, even if it looks acceptable every morning. Measure conditions beside the foliage rather than at the opposite end of the room.

Wet medium and humidity are different controls

The stem base needs both moisture and oxygen. Waterlogged fine material can provide abundant water while restricting the air needed for new roots. Virginia Cooperative Extension describes a porous rooting medium with water retention and low fertility; excessive fertilizer can inhibit or damage young roots. Check what is actually in the container, including pre-added fertilizer, before treating pale leaves with another feed. A rooting hormone is also not a fertilizer or a cure for poor drainage. Check three places: the upper surface, the depth containing the cutting base and the catch tray underneath. They can tell three different stories. Condensation on a cover describes conditions on that surface; it is not a complete root-zone moisture measurement. A light, airy mix in a small pot may need attention sooner than a large pot under the same dome. Keep a simple note of each watering and the reason for it so your next check is based on observed drying rather than habit.

Roots without new shoots require a different question

Confirm that the cutting contains the plant parts needed to make a complete new plant. Many species cannot regenerate from an isolated leaf even if it forms roots; appropriate stem tissue and a viable bud may be necessary. Other plants, including African violets and some begonias, can form new plants from leaf material. Virginia's propagation guide distinguishes these methods. A leaf that stays attractive with roots is not proof that a shoot-producing node is present.

For a proper stem cutting with roots, examine how much root development exists. One short root cannot support a large canopy as reliably as a branching system. Missouri Extension notes that rooting time differs greatly among plants and describes the move from moist, humid conditions into a separate pot as a particularly critical stage. Use a dated photograph of the growing point to detect gradual change. Record whether the root system is extending, whether existing leaves remain firm and whether the stem is sound. If all three are favorable, allow time. If leaves deteriorate while the root zone stays wet, revisit drainage and root condition. Adding fertilizer on every stalled-growth day makes it harder to learn which condition was limiting.

Account for succulent stems, water rooting and cold-season timing

Succulent cuttings can rot under a constantly wet regime appropriate for softer leafy material. Missouri lists jade as needing particularly good drainage and a relatively dry rooting approach, while its plant table also shows that croton and dracaena can be slow. The point is to adjust expectations to the plant, not to assign every cutting a standard dome-and-misting routine. A shared propagation tray may need to be divided into different care groups.

Water-rooted houseplants face another transition when moved into potting mix. Iowa State notes that these roots may be poorly adapted to the new medium and that wilting or leaf drop can follow. Keep care consistent and allow establishment before fertilizing. Hardwood cuttings can also take months to root, according to Purdue, so an intact winter cutting should not be discarded simply because a two-week promise failed. Look for species-appropriate progress while continuing to remove actual decay.

Run the next attempt as a useful comparison

Keep the best-supported changes small. If bases rotted in saturated medium, change the medium or drainage and retain the same species and stem stage. If tips wilted in afternoon sun, change exposure before replacing every component. Write the number taken, rooted, lost to soft decay and lost while potting; a single overall success percentage hides where the process broke down. Ten cuttings that root but die after uncovering call for a different change from ten stems that never form roots.

If failures continue despite sound basic conditions, compare your timing and material with a species-specific extension reference or ask a local diagnostic service about persistent symptoms. Keep questionable batches apart from healthy propagation stock. Once roots are adequate and the plant remains stable, follow hardening rooted cuttings and transplant timing. A successful diagnosis ends with a young plant that grows independently, so include the transition out of propagation conditions in your observations rather than stopping at the first root.
