Read the plant from the bottom upward

A curled leaf is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Start with the oldest lower leaves, then compare the middle canopy and growing tip. Notice whether leaves have rolled along their edges while retaining their usual shape, or whether new leaves are narrow, twisted, unusually small, or unevenly colored. Include the stem and fruit in your inspection. The distinction between an older leaf changing posture and a growing point producing abnormal tissue is often more useful than a close-up photograph alone.

Write down the distribution before removing anything. Is every plant affected, one variety in several places, one end of a bed, or one isolated tomato? Photograph an unaffected neighboring plant from the same distance. These observations give an extension diagnostician context and help you resist matching the first alarming internet image. A symptom on one leaf should not silently become a conclusion about every plant in the garden. Likewise, normal-looking neighboring foliage does not by itself rule out an early pest or disease problem.

Recognize the common physiological pattern

Upward rolling of older tomato leaves is associated with heat and moisture stress; some cultivars show it more readily. Maryland Extension describes this physiological pattern as having little practical effect on growth and yield in its leaf-curling guidance. It is not, by itself, a reason to remove a productive plant. Examine root-zone moisture and recent weather, then compare new growth with the older rolled leaves before deciding that the plant is deteriorating.

Minnesota's tomato-disorder guide adds that physiological rolled leaves may feel firm and leathery and may remain rolled even after conditions improve. That makes “did the old leaf flatten?” a poor success measure. Maintain suitable care and watch for normal expansion of subsequent leaves, continued growth, and fruit development. Avoid stripping off every rolled leaf to make the plant look tidier. In an observation notebook, label the diagnosis provisional and state the evidence that would make you reconsider it, such as new mottling or progressive stunting.

Keep wilting separate from firm leaf roll

A rolled edge and a limp branch describe different changes. Check whether the leaf remains firm, whether the petiole and growing tip also droop, and whether one side of the plant is affected more than the other. Maryland Extension lists several causes of tomato wilting and explains why other possibilities should be ruled out before diagnosing Fusarium wilt. Do not rename persistent wilt as harmless physiological roll merely because some leaves also curl.

Compare the same branch early and late in the day, and record root-zone moisture at each check. If a plant remains limp with suitable moisture, document stem condition and progression and request diagnostic advice. Avoid cutting open multiple healthy stems as an exploratory test. A clinic can tell you which tissue would be useful. This distinction helps prevent two errors: repeatedly watering a plant whose problem is elsewhere, and removing a productive plant that only has firm rolled leaves.

Look for the pest itself

Turn leaves over, especially around young growth, and inspect folded areas with a hand lens. Aphids can produce distortion and sticky honeydew; their bodies or shed skins may be easier to find than the original feeding point. Maryland's tomato problem key pairs pest signs with leaf symptoms. A pest diagnosis is stronger when the organism, its feeding location, and the damage agree. A stray insect resting on an already damaged leaf may have no connection to the cause.

Some pests require more than casual inspection. Maryland's broad-mite account describes distortion near tomato growing points that can resemble virus, herbicide, or nutrient injury; distinctive eggs may provide the diagnostic evidence. Do not claim that failure to see mites with the naked eye excludes them. If distorted growth persists without visible aphids, send clear photographs and ask whether a sample is needed. Avoid starting an indiscriminate spray program while you are still deciding which organism, if any, is present.

Treat mottling and distorted growth as a reason to investigate

Mosaic-like color changes, rings, uneven growth, and stunting widen the differential beyond ordinary leaf roll. They do not identify a particular virus by themselves. Several problems can occur on the same tomato, and a weather-stressed plant can also carry insects. Take a picture of an entire affected branch, both surfaces of a representative leaf, and the growing tip. Include dates of symptom appearance and whether the problem followed transplanting or developed on an established plant.

Until you receive useful diagnostic guidance, avoid taking cuttings from a suspect plant or carrying its trimmings through your propagation area. Keep your observations proportional: record “mottling on new leaves” rather than announcing a named virus from appearance alone. If a local clinic requests a sample, follow its packaging and delivery directions so tissue arrives useful for examination. Ask what to do with the remaining plant after identification. Removing an entire crop is a significant management choice and should follow more than the single word “curl.”

Reconstruct possible herbicide exposure without assigning blame

Recent lawn treatment, a reused sprayer, newly applied grass clippings, or imported organic material belongs in the history when growth becomes unusually twisted or straplike. Symptoms alone cannot establish the chemical, source, or person responsible. Look at unrelated broadleaf plants nearby and record whether they changed at the same time. Keep packaging, product names, and dates if they are already available. These details make the question answerable without turning an uncertain observation into an accusation.

Do not attempt to reverse suspected exposure with fertilizer, extra soil amendments, or repeated heavy watering. Those actions do not identify the cause and may introduce additional stress. Pause use of a suspect material while seeking local advice, and retain its original label or source record. A useful question is “could this pattern and history fit an exposure?” A less useful one is “which spray cures herbicide damage?” If guidance concerns whether produce can be used after a specific exposure, obtain an answer for that product and situation separately.

Use a short monitoring plan with a stopping point

For a plant that otherwise looks healthy, choose a representative rolled leaf and a growing tip, photograph them, and maintain ordinary moisture checks. Revisit the plant under comparable light and at a similar time. Record actual changes rather than trying to grade every small variation in leaf angle. If a hot afternoon caused concern, include an early-morning inspection so you are not comparing two very different conditions. This is an observation method, not a promise that a disease will reveal itself within a fixed interval.

For example, three vigorous tomatoes with old lower leaves rolled upward and normal new tips suggest a different next step from one short plant whose newest leaves are mottled and misshapen. The first case may justify steady care and observation; the second warrants diagnostic help. Escalate sooner for rapid decline, persistent wilting despite appropriate moisture, or a spreading abnormal-growth pattern. Once the cause is identified, use the relevant guide for that problem. Keep the leaf-curl record so next season's variety and site decisions are based on recognizable patterns rather than memory of a stressful afternoon.
